In this episode, Mandy stepped away from the competition to try her hand at cooking a Southern-style country fried chicken dinner for all of us. Since her hands were full, she called upon the boys to deliver some sweets to compliment her meal! Without further ado, here is how we answered her very simple but direct instruction, “Bring me apple desserts.”
You know the drill by now: so many bakes to write up, so little time. Let’s get cracking!
Mark made Apple & Jalapeño Tarts. The phyllo shells were excellent for this recipe, but the jalapeños were impossible to taste and the apple filling was far too sweet.
I made a traditional Tarte Tatin, but I couldn’t find Pink Lady apples so I used Cripp’s Pink. They lent an unusually starchy, savory flavor to the tart that displeased me.
Dan’s Apple Crostata was perfectly cooked, but Dan accidentally added twice the amount of allspice, which gave it an unpleasant flavor.
Mandy was quick to voice her disappointment with all of our desserts and explained that she would have been better off just eating an apple. Despite her Paul Hollywood-esque jab, we eventually determined that the Apple Crostata was the least offensive dessert, making Dan this week’s Star Baker!
Congratulations, Dan, and thank all of you for reading along. Join us next week for our technical challenge, Three Ingredients Week! Until next time, bon appétit!
