The Great British Baking Show: Walton Edition, Episode 1 – Pilot

Welcome, everyone, to the very first episode of The Great British Baking Show: Walton Edition!

Due to a miscommunication, Dan and Mandy didn’t realize we were baking this week, so our first episode was a competition between Mark and I. Also, we had not settled on a well defined episodic format, so no theme was chosen. We were free to bake anything we felt like. That’s okay; pilot episodes are often a good place to shake out problems and get an idea of how to do things better in later episodes. These are Mark’s excellent entry for Episode 1, which I believe he called Lemon Meltaways. They are very light tea biscuits with a bit of sugar icing and the most delicious lemon flavor. I could’ve eaten the entire batch of these things!

My entry for Episode 1 won me Star Baker! It was a 15 layer butter sponge schichttorte with peach mango jam and an orange cinnamon chocolate glaze. Traditional schichttortes have 20 layers, but, just as Paul Hollywood had done before him, Dan was kind enough to count them during the judging phase and let me know that I had come up short. Thank you, Dan. Super kind of you.

Until next time, bon appétit!
