Halloween 2023: October 8ᵗʰ – PumpkinQuest 2023, Part 1

I’m on a mission to try fifty pumpkin goodies before Halloween ends. Here’s the catch: they have to be fifty pumpkin things I have never tried before. Click the pic to see how I’ve done so far.

Now that I’m in this, fifty seems like a lot. Maybe I’ve set the bar too high. But I said fifty, so I’m aiming for fifty. Let’s get started!

1. Thomas’ Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Swirl Bread – Good, but not great. I have tried it with peanut butter and as a sandwich bread for bologna and swiss cheese. I think it may be best toasted and buttered, and I intend to try that soon.

2. Pillsbury Grands! Pumpkin Spice Rolls – These are damned good. I am impressed that the icing is pumpkin spice as well as the rolls. It’s a nice touch.

3. Wendy’s Pumpkin Spice Frosty Cream Cold Brew – Meh. Just a slightly substandard pumpkin spice coffee. I can’t see myself buying it again.

4. Wendy’s Pumpkin Spice Frosty – SWEET CHRIST JESUS. I’m not exaggerating one bit when I tell you that this is one of the best milkshakes I have ever had. Imagine the smoothest, lightest, most perfectly spiced pumpkin pie you’ve ever eaten topped with the finest, freshest whipped cream you’ve ever had. Now imagine you could drink it. This is OUTSTANDING.

5. Hostess Iced Pumpkin CupCakes – I’m not usually a cake man, but these are excellent. A little too sweet, as are most snack cakes, but excellent nonetheless.

6. Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Cookies – These are really tasty, but I find the molasses overpowers the pumpkin.

7. Good & Gather Pumpkin Pie Granola – DAMN. This is exceptional. Lighter than less expensive granola and far tastier. It costs more than I’m used to paying for granola, but it’s worth it. This is delicious.

8. Dewey’s Bakery Pumpkin Spice Cookies – These little cookies are thin and have a ginger snap texture. Excellent with coffee.

9. Noda Brewing Company Gordgeous Pumpkin Ale – Nope. Put all the pumpkin in it you like, but I still don’t like beer. As ale goes, this was tolerable, but no. Just no.

10. Skyline Chili Cheesecake Factory Pumpkin Cheesecake – I don’t know if Skyline Chili or Cheesecake Factory or a combination thereof are responsible for this, but it is wonderful. This texture is just what I look for in a cheesecake. This is nicely done.

11. Friendly Farms Pumpkin Spice Whipped Topping – Delightful. I never actually got around to putting it on anything. I just kept opening the fridge and eating it from the can.

12. Friendly Farms Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer – I’ve tried lots of pumpkin spice creamers and, I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much from this off brand. But it is damned good. I would put this up against Coffee-mate any time.

13. Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino – Starbucks coffee is so disappointing. Imagine someone made you a really enjoyable Frappuccino, iced it perfectly, with just the right balance of pumpkin spice and cream. Then imagine someone continually blew little puffs of cigarette smoke into your mouth as you drank it. That’s exactly how this tastes. Get your shit together, Starbucks. Why does your coffee always taste burnt?

14. Bones Coffee Company The Pumpkin King Pumpkin Pecan Praline Coffee – Now THIS is good coffee. I’ve heard good things about Bones Coffee, and this was a hell of a first impression. I didn’t know what to expect of pumpkin pecan praline. I was afraid it would be too much going on at once. I was wrong. I drank this black and it was marvelous. I will definitely be checking out more flavors from Bones Coffee. This shit was GOOD.

15. Meijer Pumpkin Cheese Coffee Cake – I said before I’m not usually a cake man, and I’m usually even less a coffee cake man. They’re usually unpleasantly tough, dry and more like bread with a bunch of sugary crap on top than actual cake. But this, my friends, is a whole different story. This was AMAZING. I’ve never had a coffee cake so moist and amazingly tender. And the flavor wasn’t just pumpkin spice, but actual pumpkin, perfectly sweet but without being cloying. Without question the best coffee cake I have ever had.

Okay, that’s fifteen. A little less than a third of the way there. I have to say, I’m not too confident. Finding thirty-five more pumpkin things I have never tried is going to be a challenge. Stay tuned for more pumpkin goodies as I find them. In the meantime, here’s today’s Skull Of The Day!

Today’s Skull Of The Day is the Don Horné Hot Sauces candy skull!

These are really good sauces, and of course they come in a couple of Halloween friendly flavors.

See you tomorrow!
