Mark reviews Perfect Creature

oct05.jpgMark here, roving movie reviewer for The Sci-Fi Guys (if by 'roving' you mean sitting on my ass on the couch), with a new movie on which to report. Click the pic to read more about the alternate reality vampire thriller Perfect Creature.

For those of you that know me, you know I love vampire movies. And unlike many other people I don’t worry about it being a “good” movie to watch it. In fact, I may be crazier than a shit house rat (my new phrase of the week…I love it!) but, the worse the movie is the better I tend to like it.  So, in the spirit of Halloween and for vampire lovers everywhere, I suggest you check out the move Perfect Creature.

Allow me to paraphrase the movie jacket: In this movie set in an alternate world where vampires live peacefully among people, a crazy ass vampire named Edgar begins feasting on flu victims. Sent by the Brotherhood Church of the Vampire to capture Edgar, some guy named Silus uncovers the creature's chilling secrets. There is a moderately attractive woman as the police chief who helps Silus hunt down the bloodsucker in Nuovo Zelandia, an alternate dimension of 1960s New Zealand…

Now, this movie was actually pretty entertaining… it turns out the Brotherhood (vampires) is an all male offshoot of humanity that were embraced as spiritual saviors BEFORE people went wacko and killed them all, thereby dooming the existence of vampires to myth and legend (just like OUR world… seriously… vampires were real once… I feel it in my crazy bone). They serve as monks/priests/scientists in this alternate world.  Influenza is running rampant, genetic engineering has been outlawed, and they have cool flying dirigibles. Think gothic steam punk mixed with Jack the Ripper. It reminds me somewhat of Adrian Paul’s The Breed, which is another pretty good vampire movie.

If you do a Google image search with the entry "perfect creature," exactly 14 quadrillion versions of this image show up. Click the pic if you don't believe me.

Another cool thing about this movie is you get to see tiny babies with tiny vampire fangs.  How cool is that?  I bet breast feeding would decrease dramatically if babies were born with tiny razor sharp fangs… just a guess, though!

How about some people posting on here some of their favorite vampire movies?  I need something else to watch… I’m running out of the damn things!

On another note, here is a cool website to go to for Halloween. It’s got ideas for do it yourself Halloween projects from costumes to rat cakes to green lantern rings (all the basics). Check it out:

Sweet review, chief. This movie looks pretty amazing. I’d love to see it. Everything I’ve read online says its the most original vampire movie in a very long time.

Check that out. I’m a huge fan of metal DVD cases. There’s just something so cool about them. The awesome news is that the 2-disc Directors Cut of Perfect Creature comes in this sweet DVD tin. The bad news is that its only available in region 2 encoding for PAL TVs, which makes it fairly useless here in the States. You can still watch it on your computer, though. DVD-ROM drives will read any region.

Dunedin vampire movie NZ’s biggest film deal
    12:00AM Sunday May 15, 2005
    By David Fisher

A horror film made in Dunedin and partly funded by taxpayers has been tipped as New Zealand’s biggest movie deal.

The movie watchers’ bible, Empire, says the film Perfect Creature is being bought by 20th Century Fox and is planned for wide release before the end of the year. With a budget of $20 million, it could bring in huge money for the film’s backers, including the NZ Film Fund.

“Forget The Lord of the Rings, forget King Kong, this is apparently the biggest sale ever made of a Kiwi film,” Empire said.

The film is directed by New Zealander Glenn Standring and is being shown at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Standring yesterday played down comparisons of success, but he did admit: “We’ve done pretty well.” Perfect Creature stars British actor Dougray Scott and Saffron Burrows. It is set in an alternate reality – a “retro-futuristic world” – in which humans and vampires coexist. Standring’s previous feature film The Irrefutable Truth About Demons sold strongly internationally.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the deal is “the largest sale ever made of a New Zealand film”. It has already been sold in the United Kingdom, Japan, across Europe and in Southeast Asia.

As for my favorite vampire movies, I’m going to have to go with Fright Night, an annual Halloween must. Its an 80s classic with an awesome 50s monster movie feel. Also, surprisingly excellent music. Also, I can’t think of any other vampire movies right now. I’m drawing a complete blank.

  3. DanM Says:

I really don’t have a favorite vampire movie although I did enjoy the Blade Trilogy, both Underworld movies, John Carpenter’s Vampires, and the Lost Boys.

  4. DanM Says:

Oh, Interview with a Vampire was also decent. I didn’t get to see the “sequel” though.

  5. DanM Says:

Ultraviolet was also a “quasi-vampire movie”. It was a horrible flick, but Milla Jovavich never looked hotter.

  6. DanM Says:

And how could anybody forget Bram Stoker’s Dracula with Gary Oldman?
Or that wonderful turd of a movie Dracula 2000?
Or that steaming pile of shit called Van Helsing?

  7. DanM Says:

Or the crown jewel of Eddie Murphy’s movie career: Vampire in Brooklyn

  8. Chris Says:

I enjoyed John Carpenter’s Vampires and Dracula 2000. I really liked the first and third Blade movies, but I consider those to be more superhero/action movies than actual vampire movies. I think Interview With A Vampire is probably the best vampire movie I’ve ever seen, but its not all that fun to watch. Its a bit heavy for just a cool horror movie night; most times I’m watching a vampire flick, I’m looking for something a little lighter.

As for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, you can click the link below to read my review from last year’s Halloween celebration. I am most definitely NOT a fan.

bram-stokers-dracula-halloween-thumbnail.jpgI saw this movie on a rack full of other Halloween DVDs for $10, and I was so psyched. I grabbed it, remembering that it was good, remembering how much I liked it way back in 1992. After watching it again, I can't imagine what the hell I'm remembering, because this movie sucks more than (insert your own vampire pun here).

I love the movie! I’ve been trying to see if there was a sequel made though… Another vampire movie I noticed that wasn’t mentioned, and it is a good one mind you, is ‘Queen of The Damned’.
