Here is my pitiful attempt at a review for this website. Please be gentle with your skewering comments. On to the review…

What do you get when you cross Desperate Housewives with tachyon accelerators and diverging time loops? The newest series on the Sci-Fi Channel on Tuesday nights… Eureka. The premise of this show is that there is a small hidden town in the northwest where, at the request of Einstein and President Truman, America’s scientific geniuses live and work. In return for sharing their knowledge, they get the best of everything… schools, equipment, funding, etc. What you end up with is a wacky town of off-the-wall genius stereotypes that are kept in line by your local “normal” sheriff. That’s enough description… either get on the Sci-Fi Channel website or watch it yourself!

So… what do I think? I think it’s got potential. It could be great and it could be crap. I enjoyed several of the pilot’s plot lines and effects. It was worth watching. A little slow in the beginning but it picked up by the end. Overall I would say watch this Sci-Fi Channel original. For a network that is know for amazing series (Stargate: SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, The Chronicle) and for it’s amazingly horrible movies (Rottweiller, Snakefish, Sabertooth, Mammoth, etc) it looks good. Better than good, actually. I’m willing to wait it out and see on this one. Tune in… you might like it!

Matt Frewer (Max Headroom, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Dawn of the Dead (2004), Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Stand, Taken, Gargoyles) plays Jim Taggart, Eureka’s “biological containment specialist.”

On another note, I about shot my load when I saw the previews for The Dresden Files coming to the Sci-Fi Channel. This series, adapted from Jim Butcher’s book series of the same name, tells the tales and trials of Harry Dresden, White Wizard and Arcane PI. He’s a gumshoe with the magical mojo to back him up. They are great series and I encourage you to check it out. I can’t wait to see this series… I hope it exceeds my expectations!

Signing off…

Mark

First time post! Mark’s Sci-Fi-Guys.com cherry has officially been popped!

Thanks for reviewing this show. I wish I had seen it. I’ve heard a few negative things about the so-so special effects, but I’ve read nothing but absolute praise and glory heaped on everything else about this show. Sounds like I missed a good one.

The Dresden Files sounds like an interesting concept. I’m liking the idea of a mystical private investigator. The role playing game sounds like loads of fun, too. Check it out at dresdenfilesrpg.com. Looks pretty sweet!

Doesn’t the guy with the light saber kind of look like Mark??

  3. Mark Says:

That’s not a light saber…it’s one of the 3 holy swords of the defenders of humanity. And thank you! That guy is COOL!

  4. Chris Says:

Yeah, the 3 holy swords of the defenders of humanity. No duh; EVERYONE knows that.

Short and sweet: Eureka = Sci Fi Gold

    Alright!!

I’m sorry about the whole light saber thing. I didn’t even know what the show was about until Dan and I watched Eureka last night.

I thought Eureka it was funny and creative. Now if they could only get Joss to direct :)

Damn Mark beat me to the punch, I was gonna write a review oh well I’ll just throw in my 2 cents here. I really enjoyed the show I thought the writing as well as the acting was pretty good. On a side note John actually liked it as well and said he would watch it again and he is not into sci-fi at all.

Although the special effects were kinda cheap it’s about what I expected from a sci-fi orginal series. They don’t have a huge blockbuster budget for effects so they do what they can, which at times ain’t great, but I thought the story made up for it.

Overall I would give the show an 8/10 right now, I will definately watch the next episode and hope that the writing stays on track. Unlike the Dead Zone, which for some reason this season has become completely unwatchable. I’m also psyched for the Dresden Files, which I thought was gonna be a cheap X-Files rip-off but turns out it’s not.

I’m just glad to see sci-fi producing new orginal programming that doesn’t revolve around Stargate or BattleStar Glactica. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but they do have viewers out there with other interests. And of course I’m still pissed that they took The Chronicle off the air that show ruled!

Saw the 2nd episode of this show. It continues to impress. I’m hooked and planned on watching it weekly. It’s nice to see a “smart” show on TV rather than some lame-brained comedy!

Final posting regarding this topic….saw the 3rd episode. Enjoyed it again although I get the feeling they are still setting the stage for some major drama/action later. Love the fact they are always throwing out these 11/12 year old geniuses.

    It’s good…watch the dang thing!

Just to note that during episode 3 of Eureka, Mark cried.

Was there a particularly touching insurance commercial?

Is anyone following this thread anymore? What’s the current thoughts on Eureka?

  13. Chris Says:

As I understand it, this is Dan and THO Girl’s new show of choice. At least I think it was them. All I know is I recently spoke to a married couple who were all about this show.

    Keep up the good work
